Please – Help SAVE the California Commission on the Status of Women

For the past 46 years, the California Commission on the Status of Women has served as an independent voice for the women and girls of California through its work with the Legislature and other State agencies.

It continues to be the only state agency that looks specifically at the impact of state actions on women.

In July 2011, the state Commission received a devastating budget cut, with nearly half the Commission’s budget being slashed. Since then, we have worked diligently to reduce our expenses in order to make sure the important work of the Commission continues.

Unfortunately, without additional funds, the state Commission will be forced to close its doors before the end of the fiscal year.

The state Commission has served as an important link between many communities and state government.

These include the

working poor and their families

incarcerated women

those with limited English language ability

and those with less access to government services.

Through its public hearings across the state, the Commission has sought input from women and girls to better develop sound public policy.

It seems ironic that, at the very time budget cuts are being made that disparately impact women and their families, the Commission that speaks for them would be eliminated. That voice is needed now more than ever.

Please support the California Commission on the Status of Women. Your tax deductible donation is greatly appreciated!

Tax ID#68-0285369

Make checks payable to the California Commission on the Status of Women and mail them directly to:

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support,

January 13-15, 2012

Member Commissions are invited to attend the Annual ACCW Retreat in Cambria, California on the weekend of January 13-15, 2012.

You can see the Draft Agenda by clicking on the link at the end of this article. We intend to have a full weekend of meetings in order to get much business accomplished.

LODGING: There are a few “beds” available at local members of the San Luis Obispo Commission, so if you would like to stay at someone’s house, contact Suzanne Doty as soon as possible. First come, first served.

Otherwise, Paulla Ufferheide, ACCW President has negotiated a group rate at the Cambria Pines Lodge. The rate is $138.86 per person inclusive for 2 nights double occupancy, includes breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning. We will have a buffet dinner at the Cambria Pines Lodge on Saturday night which will cost an additional $35 per person. That amount will need to be paid to the ACCW directly. You will find a brochure of the Lodge to download at the end of this article.

Please make your room reservation directly with the Lodge before December 13, 2011. Tell them you are with the ACCW. The number is 800-966-6490.

As a courtesy to the San Luis Obispo Commission who will be providing lunch, etc. during the retreat, please let Suzanne know by email if you will be attending and which commission you belong to. Also inform Suzanne is your current chair/president is not on this email list by providing her name and email address.

It’s imperative that we have a head count as soon as possible.

Thanks for your cooperation. Looking forward to seeing you at the Retreat.
